As streaming opens audiences to Welsh language bands, Sŵnami say it's getting easier to break through.

For Sŵnami it was never a consideration to sing in English - Welsh is their first language.

"It just came completely natural. We speak to each other in Welsh so why not do it in song as well?" Gruff Jones, from the band, tells us."Around releasing our first album, we represented BBC Radio 1 at Eurosonic Festival in the Netherlands," guitarist Ifan Ywain says. "In Europe, language isn't the most important thing and a lot of people speak two languages," adds Gruff.

They have been asked to sing in English in the past but it's not something they worry about too much.In fact their answer is always: "If people like Christine and the Queens can sing in French and Sigur Ros in their own made-up language, why can't we sing in Welsh?"

difference mawr rhwng swnami a BTS, BTS yn canu yn saesneg hefyd korean! llwythi o grŵpiau kpop yn canu Korean, saesneg, Japanese ac chinese. di Swnami Ddim byd fel BTS, wrach gwylio Day6 sydd yn band korean ac Ddim yn dawnsio fel mae BTS yn poblogaidd ynddo

Because, aside from a minority of people in Wales (who are probably all still waiting for somebody to come an fix their video recorders for Channel 5), and a handful of people in a remote part of Argentina, nobody speaks or understands it.

nathanrees1927 look at the state of some of the replies here

Because it sounds crap.

There is a market dominance for English in the charts, but there are successful artists who sing in other languages, inc. minority languages. Swnami_ are really great, I don't see why they couldn't have similar success. I hope this article leads to more people checking them out.

Nothing against that. Everybody is entitled to sing whatever they want. If the song is catchy, it may be a world success. It happened recently with Despacito. Carry on!

im genuinely confused by the amount of people saying that they wouldn’t listen to artists who sing in “foreign” languages (lol) when the biggest boy band on earth right now are Korean adding Sŵnami to my Spotify playlists now! 😊👍🏻

Tipping point. The anti-Welsh language sentiment on here has moved from vile to just silly.

People actually saying 'people won't listen to music they don't understand' as if Gangnam Style wasn't a thing

That's the reason we won't listen to Chinese music.

You can sing in whatever language you want the issue is only a small percentage of the population will be able to understand you and that unfortunately narrows your market.

Because thats life, get on with it, few people understand welsh...it’s not rocket science. Singing in a language that nobody understands is hardly going to get you fame 🤷🏻‍♂️ Its a non-question. Why can I not get a job if I’m not applying to places? BBC and their bs headlines again.

Mad how people can love K-pop and have no issues learning the lyrics, but as soon as a Welsh band wants to be successful in Welsh then all of a sudden it's 'too difficult' and 'not interesting' or some bullshit 🙄

Maybe our Eurovision 2022 entry should be in Welsh. Would certainly get us attention and a great way to promote Wales throughout Europe and beyond.

A bit surprised that Anweledig or Yws Gwynedd weren't the first to a million streams. Pretty sure I've streamed each a million times, myself. I might be including Gai Toms and Frizbee streams in those totals...

Why not indeed. If the music's good it's great with me. 👍🏻👍🏻

I can’t understand why a bunch of Welsh blokes singing in Welsh wouldn’t appeal to everyone who don’t know the Welsh language! Either the music buying public are racist or the music is just plain old sh1t ! 😎

Great band! First album was superb, can wait for the new one!! Music is universal!!

Men with 4 followers weighing in and lecturing Swnami_ about how the music industry works because they heard a sigurros song once is the essence of this thread.

Can you whistle?

You can be successful!!! Just make better music! Welsh is so cool, But your melodies are a bit of a snooze.

Relatively small audience likely to feel engaged I would think

Those saying 'because only Welsh speakers understand it' are way off. On the continent songs in different languages are successful right across Europe. Only the UK is reluctant to enjoy music from non English cultures and languages.

Stick to the rugby Wales were crowned Six Nations champions 😂

Fuck the haters. I am proud of Welsh language, and am proud to say I am one of 2M people learning on duolingo. Loads English speakers have no idea of lyrics in many songs. Welsh, the language that has apparently been dying for decades lol.

Ho hum; time to get the card out again for the usual suspects

Mae'r sylwadau yn gysylltiedig â'r erthygl hon yn dangos atgasedd beunyddiol at y Cymry a'r Gymraeg.

Hi, just so you know Sigur Rós have an accent in their name, and don’t always sing in Hopelandic (the made up language), often their songs are in Icelandic.

You can. In Wales.

Good grief, there are some pig ignorant comments on here about the Welsh language. 🥺

For all claiming the reason for the (clearly rhetorical) question Swnami_ are posing is because people want to understand what people are saying & “no-one” understands Welsh, here’s a playlist of successful bands that sing in fictional languages, u berks

LBH. Even the English struggle with their own language!

No

Maybe it’s because there’s only 1/2 a mill people speaking Welsh - so depends how you judge success - if all 1/2 million listen to you how much more successful do you want to be ? If mor3 than that then don’t sink in Welsh !!

Study your market, it should be easy, it is a pretty small statistical sample

Because your language has no vowels. Next.

It sounds crap and very few understand it.

I don't know why can't you? who's stopping you?

The Welsh language is only interesting to the Welsh.

Because no fucker understands it or wants hear it! It’s how be famous works people like it then ur successful if they don’t then ur not

Took me 5 mins to work out how to pronounce their name!!!

Because most ppl want to understand what the song is saying.

Because you'd sound even more daft.

The size of the market available to you! Even if you just consider the UK, the vast majority of the country don’t speak Welsh. So if you perform only in Welsh, the number of people that may enjoy and pay to hear you is limited, limiting you chance of success... it’s not difficult

Absolutely fab idea but if it’s not for welsh speaking audience song has no meaning and hence you can’t be famous outside UK let alone welsh speaking belt.

Give it a go, no one is stopping you. Let’s see how short your careers are.

Because more people speak Klingon than Welsh And Klingon is surprisingly soothing when set to music

Cos no one speaks Welsh and you mark success by numbers doh !

Because no one likes the Welsh.

Hahahah this is the funniest satire article I’ve read in ages, fair play.

Report on the police brutality in Bristol.

Because those that rule don't like hearing people conversing in their own language. The BBC has done a great job in keeping the Welsh language alive, but honestly, it's more of a swab than recognition of the importance. Let's address the important stuff now, flags aren't nations.

Easy answer? Music's great, but you're performing in mainly English speaking countries, or countries where English is spoken to a degree as to be well understood by most of the population. English music is too popular in the UK for modern Welsh music to gain a foothold. (1).....

Because 'in Schools' in the UK, those who learn English as a second language, are too shy to share their own 'to fit in' English people tend to learn only colloquial languages depending on holiday destinations. Everybody loses out. Classes should be multilingual & Teachers

Being half Welsh myself, I feel I have a right to comment. I'm an Englishman at heart, literally born and bred, but I'm also immensely proud of my Welsh heritage. Nobody will ever take that away from me.

Because it sound similar to the noise a pig makes when it's shitting.

I mean, doesn’t everyone speak Welsh?

Too many consonants.

The rank state of them

Because they haven't released an album since 2017?

You can if you have good tunes.

sing in Welsh, French, Czech, German - don't mind!

Sing in English you silly twitl
