Russian paratroopers have moved into the city as its jets take advantage of air defence shortages

Outgunned Ukrainian soldiers are staging a desperate defence of the elevated city of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine as it comes under, said Russia intended to take Chasiv Yar by 9 May as it builds up to an anticipated summer offensive. Ukraine’s position has “worsened” along the eastern front, he said, while claiming the city’s defenders were receiving ammunition and drone reinforcements.Russian sources claim further gains.

Chasiv Yar, whose pre-war population of about 12,000 has largely fled, offers geographical advantages for its defenders not seen in previous battles. It is situated at high altitude, allowing observation of the area and enemy attacks. Russian attempts to surround it could be complicated by lakes and rivers., including new lines of trenches and anti-tank “dragon’s teeth”, indicating an intention to defend the city even as conditions deteriorate.

Military analysts believe the loss of Chasiv Yar and its commanding heights would allow Russia to attack Donetsk’s two largest cities still in Ukrainian hands, Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, and potentially take control of the region. Russia has begun massing forces ahead of the expected offensive, which Mr Zelensky predicted could begin in May. Ukraine said last month that it had identified 100,000 Russian troops being prepared for new offensive operations.
