The vans are based on electric black cabs which came into use in London in 2017
The vans are refitted electric black taxi cabs. The design that is ultimately launched will probably be different. Royal Mail, which is partnering with the London Electric Vehicle Company, plans to launch more later this year. The battery will last for a typical postal round. It can also be extended if needs be to cope with longer, more remote locations.
Poor kids work in mines for the lithium in the batteries, the untold story of the electric car
... and do some taxi work to supplement their salaries. !! For posties it’s the only alternative to doing overtime & live normal life. RoyalMailGroup royalmail
Battery degeneration means that in 6 months it will no longer be able to make the full round without charging. Electric cars are like flogging a dead horse. It's simple physics. Will cost you £10,000 per year in battery replacement. Most lithium are good for only 300 charges.
They will soon have it off pat!
Its a converted electric black taxi. But the question is how cost effective will it to be replacing these every few years cos of the batteries degrading.
How many miles do they get?
That’ll put the cost of stamps up then!
maybe they should of kept the bikes
Looks smashing. Good idea..
I do worry about this electric vehicle trend. Yes it's obviously cleaner to use an electric car but to get the materials to make an electric car isn't sustainable. I don't even think we have enough rare Earth materials to replace all the cars.
50 mile limit? No use around London that’s why the cabbies hate them
The best thing Royal Mail could do is bring back bicycles
Great news. It will encourage the installation of charging points across the UK, making it easier for both industry & domestic users, to purchase electric vehicles
Built in Britain by British workers well done the post office may many more follow your lead
Let’s hope it dosent bankrupt the vehicle manufacturers like the Hydrogen Cell attempt did with LDV Vans!
facts NOT refitted black cabs.
Good idea, especially if it’s just round town or village runs.
Pat knew
Are these PHEVs or BEVs? Not clear unless we know what distance the average post round would be to give us a clue.
Why despite 127 years of co2 it was warmer in 1893 on this day And co2 is also boosting crop growth to feed the world
They used to have really green things called bicycles. Apparently they can last 50 years with maintenance. But then they all got sold off & replaced with vans or posties walking around with K9 style trolleys. How's the story coming along on the lithium mine slaves btw?
👍👍😊
Just bring the bikes back
Yes, for a clean environment for human safety.
I am sure Postman Pat had an electric van 20 years ago.
shame its so ugly
Thought they were making post people redundant then splashing out on these
Step forward the naysayers.....Jeremy Clarkson and the oil industry desperately need you to slag off electric vehicles 👊
So by placing more strain on power stations or will these engines be of a hybrid design 🤔
It won't happen due most sorting office's are small there would be no room to install charging points. They said this some years ago when I worked for them. It's all talk about the only thing there good. Wasting money with computer systems that never worked and still in storage.
Stop delivering junk mail; use the fecking post code; trial use of bikes. Elec vans seem to need recharging constantly so not better.
Our town ( Corby ) has a lot of electric black cabs. Personally I think it's a good idea. So for local deliveries why not.
why is this even news, I've seen them going around west london for a while now!!
Not get much in them..!!!!! Obviously not up to date with mail & packet volumes.!!!!!
Wonderful and thoughtful choice, the way forward for all road vehicles.
Forward thinking. If only they'd thought if something like this to deliver milk decades ago
What happened to the e-tricycles idea?
Volvo will be happy then 👍
Repurposing an already expensive vehicle seems bizarre.
I remember using electric barrows then floats to deliver milk in the 1950s. Later on I drove a lorry to supply the depots and check the barrows and floats were plugged in to recharge. Sixty odd years ago.
A little bit behind West Lothian Council we have been using electric vehicles for a while now i use one as a building site inspector
👏🏻👏🏻🌿
Got to be a 'Postman PAT Tested' joke in there somewhere 😁
They will have got them cheap. End of line product.
Ohhh .. a Black Cab .. but in Red ... 😂
MilkFloats!!! UK EVs RoyalMail vehicles history climate environment
That actually looks pretty good 👍
Where does the power come from?
They look cool
what a stupid idea - trying to cut all those job's but these van's will NOT give a smile on a frosty morning as they post the mail through the door
Looks good
Taxi painted red with the backseats taken out and a backdoor put in - smart!
That’s a London black taxi with its back windows replaced and painted red...
Most of the UKs electricity is generated by fossil fuel. So... they’ve actually just changed the type of emissions. 😂🤣
They will be cutting emissions anyway as they slowly decline and go out of business
Good stuff
That's the cost of a first class stamp going up then
Oooo nice. Yeah those old vans were embarrassing
