Members of the Royal family will not wear military uniforms for the Duke of Edinburgh’s service of thanksgiving on Tuesday, in line with his preference for simplicity and understatement.
That's a relief. Seeing all the Queen's relatives dressed up in Gilbert-and-Sullivan uniforms as Admirals and Field Marshals festooned with medals and orders as if they were Lord Nelson or the Duke of Wellington would add an inappropriately comic aspect to a solemn occasion.
