RNLI volunteers were scrambled to an early-morning rescue today after a fishing boat sank off the coast of Shetland . The Lerwick lifeboat crew and two helicopters raced to the scene after a distress call around 5am. The 27-metre fishing vessel sounded its beacon after running into trouble 36 nautical miless off the archipelago's east coast. It had taken in a large amount of water at the stern and sank rapidly.
The eight-person crew were able to give their exact location by activating a ‘DSC’ martitime distress signal before abandoning the sinking ship. The Coastguard rescue helicopter from Sumburgh was assisted by a Norwegian chopper as all eight crew members were airlifted from their liferafts and taken to Sumburgh Airport.
