Rishi Sunak is prepared to face down the Democratic Unionist Party over its powersharing boycott in Northern Ireland despite its plan to vote against his “useless” Brexit deal this week, theipaper understands

Mr Sunak has tried to sell the brake as giving unionists in Northern Ireland an effective “veto” over the changing of EU law that applies in the region under its post-Brexit status of remaining in the European single market for goods but also the UK internal market, which is necessary to maintain an invisible border with the Republic of Ireland.

The laws made clear that UK ministers can override Stormont’s attempts to apply the veto in “exceptional circumstances” or if they conclude that the Brussels regulations would not create a regulatory border between Northern Ireland and the UK mainland. “For weeks, the Windsor Framework has been oversold and now the wildest assertions are being laid bare as its details are examined and publicly revealed,” he said after seeing the legislation.

Brexit: DUP will vote against government plansThe party's leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson says he will continue to work with the government to address 'outstanding issues'. NO WAY If we gave the DUP a 'no' jar and forced them pay into it every time they said no to something, the public coffers would be minted. This sort of also confirms that the DUP won't re-enter Stormont as well.
