Rishi Sunak’s warning, to the backbench 1922 Committee on the day he became leader, that the Conservatives had to “unite or die” is starting to whip his party into shape ✒️ paulwaugh for ipaperviews

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak speaking during the weekly session of Prime Minister’s Questions

Having blunted their opponents’ plans to put out local election leaflets declaring “Tory MPs vote against sewage crackdown”, the Conservatives were able to claim they were taking action to protect the environment. Deputy Chief Whip Craig Whittaker was heard to say: “I am fucking furious and I don’t give a fuck any more.” Within a week Truss was gone.

Starmer’s large lead in the polls has inevitably helped focus minds, as has the conviction among most that yet another Tory leadership race would leave the party looking even more ridiculous to the public.. He has watered down housebuilding plans, lifted a ban on onshore wind farms and made social media bosses liable for jail for harmful content, all after intense talks with backbenchers.
