The Prime Minister is standing by the Conservatives' manifesto pledge to cut overall migrant numbers but said an ID cards system would not help

Asked whether he has a moral objection to the idea, Mr Sunak replied: “I also think we have a long debate in this country on the civil liberties aspect of ID cards which is why I think the Labour Party probably themselves, in the course of 24 hours, changed their mind on it.”cap on the overall number of refugeesMr Sunak said: “I think the first thing to do is to make sure that we can stop numbers of people coming here illegally.

He added: “The precondition for having a conversation about the right level of that is knowing that we’re in control of the numbers of people coming here in the first place.”
