The PM will look foolish if Tory dissent grows into a rebellion, but his party might not have any more appetite for civil war

Mishandling EU negotiations finished off two of his predecessors: Theresa May and David Cameron.

The PM will look foolish if the dissent grows into a rebellion, and he would be weakened ahead of troublesome local elections in May, when the Conservatives are expected to take a pasting. Last night, Tory Eurosceptics met the DUP’s leader to plot their tactics. They are correct to worry that Mr Sunak could weaken his hand in talks by jettisoning the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill. One warned that Mr Sunak will “rip the Conservatives apart” if he ploughs on without DUP support. But does the rest of the party have the appetite for civil war, after seven years of conflict?

The Prime Minister cannot be seen to betray the vote for Brexit or to undermine Britain’s negotiating stance. However, during an acute cost of living crisis, plenty of voters would look on unfavourably at a fresh round of Conservatives slugging it out with one another.
