Rise Of The Rōnin – familiar yet different It seems obvious at this point that Nioh 1 and 2 are never going to get the credit they deserve, but they really are excellent games and the best Soulslikes of the last generation – that had nothing to do with FromSoftware. They had a similarly dark atmosphere as From’s games but a substantially more involved combat system, which was not only worthy of praise in its own right but helped differentiate the game from its inspiration.
When you start the game and create your character you choose from several preset class types, but the two clearest ways to play the game are as all guns blazing samurai or a more subtle ninja type. What makes Rise Of The Rōnin interesting is that both elements are equally nuanced, with the ability to use a grappling hook and creep around on rooftops as a ninja, as you use gadgets to distract or silently take down guards.
