In August 2011 a man was shot dead by police in London, triggering the worst civil unrest in decades.

"As we got closer, we could make out the silhouettes of rioters. The noise then started to increase dramatically. Communication became much more challenging purely because of the noise. It was almost impossible to hear the radios.

As dusk falls, violence bubbles up again. Police are called to Enfield, Brixton and the Oxford Circus area. Riot and mounted officers patrol the streets. "I saw about 16 men, all in grey tracksuits. They came from other parts and said: 'Today, we are putting down the postcode war. Today we're here to help you.'

"And then it all kicked off. It was like, 'I'm going to get four TVs - well, I'm going to get five.' It was no drama, no stress, everyone had the power. Everyone had the strength."The chief inspector operating on the High Road phoned me up to tell me they're exhausted, they need a break, is there any relief for them?

“And I call them soldiers. And they stood united together on the frontline, pelting the police. And that was really, really nice.' Ironic. I was in Afghanistan at the time and it was mused that a great way of decompressing our guys would be a trip to london with a batton…

Yes dam right...every pork station should have burnt. When rashan charles got murdered london should have erupted again. Looting is just another outcome of protests and riots.

Was in London. 20 years. Will never forget that sinister exposure of the dark side of English population. Not a proud day for UK.

Just be ready cus plenty more to come…certain groups are always ready to exploit something to get away with basically stealing other peoples property

All I’ve heard today is apologists & excuses blah blah blah. The older generations of our country new real poverty, war etc. They fought, worked bloody hard and never once found the need to burn down where they lived, attack the police and steal on mass.

Before my time but wasn't it more a case of an armed gangster was shot and this provided a heaven sent opportunity to loot shops and torch small businesses? I may have got that wrong.

I remember it well. Great tele. Nothing else on worth watching
