Rail, Maritime and Transport union members at Network Rail and 13 train operators have backed strike action.

Move paves way for a 'summer of discontent' and the biggest walkout in modern history if a deal is not struck. Mounting fears that strike will cripple services, causing power blackouts, petrol shortages and empty shelves. Services could be reduced to around a fifth of the normal weekday timetable and only run from 7am to 7pm
