Visiting a new place for the first time can be overwhelming, especially if it a huge metropolitan city such as London or New York. The bright lights and music, the traffic and people always in a hurry, the tourist attractions hidden between the sky scrapers and the smell of cuisines from all around the world criss-cross past your nose, making it impossible to decide where to settle for lunch.
Except it is very much real. Your mind may wander just like that imaginary artist's, to that scene when Cameron Diaz's character Amanda first arrives in the idyllic snow-covered fictional English village in The Holiday film or any of the country villages depicted in a TV drama such as Downton Abbey or Midsomer Murders. All could have been filmed in Whalley.Burrowed in the belly of the Ribble Valley, Whalley is relatively secluded and private, giving it a hint of exclusivity - and magic.
Whalley Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey and following the dissolution of the monasteries, most of it was demolished, but ruins, which are Grade I-listed, still remain to this day and are open to visitors. A country manor has since been built in the grounds, which now operates as a residential retreat and conference centre and is run by the Diocese of Blackburn.
Today, the line is known as the Ribble Valley Line and serves both commuters and tourists between Blackburn and Clitheroe. Clitheroe Road and King Street running through the heart of the village and is lined either side by independent cafes, restaurant and clothing boutiques.
