Residents across Greater Manchester have been issued with an important warning - or they could face losing a basic right.
If a voter did not have a valid photo ID, ahead of polling day they could apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Last year in Manchester, 1,649 people were turned away from the polling station for not having the correct ID.A new letter, issued by Bury Council, said: "Remember - if you vote at a polling station, you must bring photographic ID." The warning was issued ahead of the 2024 Greater Manchester mayoral election, which is due to be held May 2.
Voters in England need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections, including UK parliamentary elections, including general elections, by-elections and recall petitions, local elections and by-elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections. MPs backed proposals to introduce mandatory voter ID for elections back in January 2022. The government said the new measure was necessary to prevent voter fraud.
