Anyone who lives in Nottinghamshire and has holidayed abroad is likely to have made the trip down the M1 or the A453 Remembrance Way to East Midlands Airport. However, how many Nottinghamshire locals can remember the time the airport was named after Nottingham despite not being in or near the city?
The decision was deemed "necessary" by airport chiefs as a way to enable foreign travellers to identify with where the airport was situated, with Nottingham the best-known city internationally in the East Midlands. The change however did not last long as the decision proved to be a controversial one.Complaints that the airport, which opened in 1965, was based in Leicestershire and closest to Derby were made. In December 2006, a second name change in three years was announced.
"I can’t believe they have consulted anyone in Nottingham. The airport using the internationally recognised Nottingham city brand has contributed to a 23 percent increase in overseas visits to the East Midlands. It’s a decision a fool would make."
