Richard Rankin is currently appearing as DS John Rebus in the BBC TV adaptation of Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus novels, and has spoken out about the moment that changed his life and career and led to him winning such an iconic role.
“The biggest thing has been the commitment,” he told The Herald, having now played the role for almost a decade. The series, about a Second World War nurse named Claire, who time travels back to 18th century Scotland where she falls in love with rugged highlander Jamie Fraser, is based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon and has so far run for six full seasons and half of season seven .
Richard’s character in Outlander first appeared in the second season, after Claire had travelled back to the 20th century to raise her daughter Brianna .
