Rebecca Joynes guilty of sex offences after grooming school pupils

A teacher faces jail after being found guilty of sexual offences against two of her pupils. Rebecca Joynes, 30, groomed one boy with a shopping trip to the Trafford Centre before taking him back to her apartment and having sex with him when he was 15. She then fell pregnant with another teenage pupil.

Jurors at Manchester Crown Court heard that Joynes took the first boy, Boy A, to the Trafford Centre and bought him a £345 Gucci belt from Selfridges. She then brought him back to her apartment in Salford where they had sex, when he was 15. By the following Monday the police had become aware of an ‘allegation’ that the boy had spent the night with a teacher. Police attended the school and a safeguarding officer noticed the boy take off a belt.

She had suggested they should meet up and at first he thought she was ‘joking’, but she picked him up near his home. After going back to her flat they had sex twice, the boy said.She was initially suspended from her post after the allegations came to light, and was later dismissed. Over a year later, police became aware that Joynes had been involved in a ‘fairly long term sexual relationship’ with another teenager, known as Boy B.

The boy started to ask if they could meet, before telling his mum he was going to the Trafford Centre. He said he was picked up by her before they went back to her flat. Giving evidence over a number of days, Joynes denied any sexual activity with the first boy, but accepted she ‘liked the attention’ he gave her. When asked why she took him to the Trafford Centre before allowing him to stay at her flat, she said: “I was stupid, I don’t know.”
