A Lisburn councillor has warned that ratepayers are facing a "critical" household waste situation with the planned closure of one of the last landfill sites open to the local authority. Concerns have been raised over the uncertainty of landfill disposal capacity and the potential increase in costs. A solution is being sought for the disposal of ratepayers' waste.

A Lisburn councillor has warned that ratepayers are facing a "critical" household waste situation with the planned closure of one of the last landfill sites open to the local authority. A corporate risk report presented to Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (LCCC) elected reps last week has identified "uncertainty going forward" regarding landfill disposal capacity and raised the possibility of a "potential associated increase in costs".

Concern for ratepayers over the closure of the Mallusk landfill site has now been raised in chambers and triggered the need for a "special item" at next month's audit and governance committee meeting to establish a solution over what to do with ratepayers' waste.
