John Rollins tried to force his victims to stay silent

John Rollins was given a sentence of 17 years and four months in 2015 after admitting three counts of rape, five of indecent assault, and four of gross indecency with a child. He initially tried to force his victims to stay silent but eventually admitted his heinous crimes when confronted two months later.

By that point, he was 66-year-old and was initially sent to HMP Durham, near to his home town. He was later moved to HMP Garth and then HMP Wymott, both in Leyland, where he went on to contract the Covid-19 virus that caused his death. After the pandemic broke out in 2020, Rollins was given a single cell on L wing, a shielding unit for older men and those requiring social care.

According to an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, a custodial manager advised Mr Rollins in May 2020 that he was eligible to apply for early release on compassionate grounds, through a special purpose licence, under the provisions for those who were medically vulnerable to Covid-19. The report does not specify whether this went any further and in October 2021, the inmate tested positive for the virus.

His health deteriorated over the coming days and he was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with inflamed lungs. Confusion linked to his Alzheimer's Disease meant he found it difficult to tolerate the mask and often removed it. His condition deteriorated and on November 2, it was agreed that he would not be resuscitated if his heart or breathing stopped.

Two days later, the prison began an application for early release, but Rollins died before it was completed. He had began palliative care on November 5 and died that evening. The PPO investigation concluded the clinical care he received was of a good standard.
