It was an incredible night of drama in the first leg of the last 16 showdown with the Scottish Premiership leaders going toe to toe with the Portuguese giants.

Rangers earned a battling 2-2 draw in rain-lashed Lisbon to hold a slight advantage against Benfica in their bid to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

But it was the Light Blues who incredibly grabbed the opening goal with just seven minutes on the clock. Fabio Silva, back in his homeland and at the club where he spent a couple of years, was involved and fed the ball to Mohamed Diomande who picked out Lawrence to steer his header home and send the visiting support wild.

Benfica were stunned and came out after the break desperate to right the wrongs of the first half and Gers were under the cosh after the restart yet it was the Light Blues who could have grabbed another with Anatoliy Trubin denying Silva. The home side were level after 67 minutes but it was a gift as Goldson headed beyond Butland from Di Maria’s free kick. The visitors were getting leggy as the clock ticked down as they threw bodies on the line but they held out.
