The delivery, said to contain 400,000 gowns, was meant to arrive on Sunday

After the delay, Local Government Minister Simon Clarke was unable to give a timescale for when the supplies would arrive, saying only that it would be in the ‘next few days’.

Separately, the government has said that 140,000 gowns have arrived from Burma – but with the NHS using 150,000 a day, the demand on resources remains intense.Last week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the UK would have received more than 1,000,000,000 items of PPE from overseas by Sunday. With fears that staff in hospitals and care homes are risking their lives, the TUC has now called for an independent inquiry into the Government’s handling of the issue, which will be mounted before the end of the year.Hospitals have sought other ways of obtaining PPE, with the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust buying 6,000 sets of overalls due to a very low stock of gowns, although it admitted this was ‘not ideal’.

Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, said trusts are being forced into ‘hand-to-mouth’ workarounds, including washing single-use gowns and restricting stocks to key areas.Chancellor Rishi Sunak told reporters at the Number 10 press briefing on Monday that work was ongoing to find more PPE. He said: ‘We’re improving our sourcing internationally and domestically to make sure we can get the PPE we need in what is a very challenging international context.

‘But people on the front line can rest assured that we’re doing absolutely everything we can and straining everything we can to get the equipment they need.’

Not surprised. Turkey is an administrative nightmare. Chartering a plane to collect stuff would be a colossal task. Much easier to have our RAF speak with theirs to arrange. Lesson learned for all.

RAF plane lands with PPE from TurkeyRAF aircraft lands in UK with delayed delivery of personal protective equipment from Turkey amid a row over a shortage of PPE in the NHS night What would be great if you can name all those hospitals who say they are short of what type of PPE. Keep hearing this but not heard of one named hospital. Name all the care sector homes who are short. We know the pandemic has hit geographical areas more than others. This has just been a gift horse for the opposition. If Covid19 hadn't happened they would be twiddling their thumbs looking for something to bash the government with. Whoever had won the 2019 GE they most probably would be experiencing the same problems now.
