Queue for the Queen reopens with 24-hour wait as resilient mourners determined to pay respects

For 15 poignant minutes, the presence in Westminster Hall of the King, the Duke of York, the Princess Royal and the Duke of Wessex, each of them in military uniform, brought together both the Queen’s closest and, perhaps, most determined mourners.

He told ITV News: “It’s special to be here, to celebrate, and to hear the different stories that people have to say. I thought by coming at 2am it was going to be a little bit quieter – I was wrong.” Charles III and the Queen Consort meet Sheinkin IV, goat mascot for the Royal Welsh Third Battalion at Cardiff Castle in Wales

The day was not without its less devout moments. As the King attended events in Cardiff accompanied by the Queen Consort, there was a smalls – the heirs to the dissenters in Aberystwyth – who held aloft signs reading “Abolish the monarchy” and “Citizens, not subjects”.
