This piece contains spoilers for Queen & Slim
While that part of the story is more specific to the Black American experience, I was completely caught off guard by how the rest of the story became an exploration of Black love, unity and sensuality. An exploration that manages to speak so clearly to Black audiences across the globe. As they embark on this unfortunate race through the American South in the hope of escaping to Cuba, our heroes are forced to dig deeper into what makes the other tick. Queen forces Slim to finally take a walk on the wild side, while he manages to break down her walls.As a Black woman in this day and age, being ‘tough’ seems to come with the territory. Every day sees us put our armour on to tackle a world that often does so much to bring us down.
As Jodie herself says to Elle US, ‘Sex can be portrayed as something that’s very animal. And Black people, especially Black men and women of our complexion, are often hypersexualized. Queen & Slim is a tale of two ill-matched strangers who transform into ride-or-die lovers due to the hurdles life throws their way; developing a complicated and inspiring romance in a world where the odds are very much stacked against them.But it’s also about the power of Black unity, showing how love and liberation are so intimately intertwined in our lives.
