Puppeteer on Rainbow's lewd show secrets from S&M gear to 'blowing pipes'

AS the Archbishop toured the studios of kids’ TV favourite Rainbow, his ITV guide proudly flicked on a control room monitor.

There were many times I caught myself watching Zippy and George copulating and thought to myself, ‘Oh, they are naughty’, before remembering that I was to blameRonnie, 71, from Islington, North London, says it all took a mischievous turn when long-standing director Pamela Lonsdale left in the late 1970s.

Their naughty antics meant exasperated directors could often be heard pleading: “Make them stop!” from the control room.Singer Jane Tucker once performed a “kinky” rehearsal song where she threw open her coat “to reveal a shiny, tight, leather S&M outfit”. At times, the rehearsal pranks crept into the show itself. One time saw the actors rearrange toy animals into “bizarre sexual positions”.Ronnie says: “It was our way of testing the director and producer to see if they would check.In 1979 the cast decided to come up with something special — just to show at the Christmas party.

Ronnie says: “It was obvious the two of them were getting closer, but nobody dared to mention it because it seemed so improbable.”
