People who continue to open restaurants and watering holes during the Covid-19 outbreak will face police action under new emergency powers under the Coronavirus Bill.Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said landlords were putting lives at risk.He said the The Shakespeare Hotel in Bolton would have its licence revoked for allegedly allowing people to drink by the back door.
Owners Hawthorn Leisure told Manchester Evening News there was ‘absolutely no truth to the suggestions’. The firm said it had been ‘strictly adhering to Government guidance’ and that the pub has not opened its doors since Friday night, when the PM ordered boozers to close.Chief Constable Hopkins also pointed the finger at the Billy Goat Inn in Mossley, Tameside for allegedly breaking the rules along with dozens of other businesses reported to the force for trading as usual.
He said it is ‘not acceptable’ that the force has had to break up barbecues in parks despite clear instructions from the Government to stay indoors. Meanwhile in Tamworth, Staffordshire, an unnamed pub was visited by police who received a tip-off it would carry on serving regulars.
Not new laws. A licence can be removed for less.
