Police have confirmed they're investigating a claim of responsibility that a new Republican group was behind a security alert in Derry last week.
The incident on Sunday, November 20, took place in the Waterside area of the city when a suspicious object was placed in a delivery driver's car in Curryneirin. A number of men allegedly "forced the driver at gunpoint to abandon the vehicle – a grey Ford Mondeo - outside Waterside Police Station". A security alert subsequently followed in the area, which led to a number of nearby homes being evacuated. The suspicious object was a viable bomb.Police had previously said the object was an elaborate hoax made to look like a car bomb.
It has now been confirmed that Detectives from the Terrorism Investigation Unit are investigating a claim of responsibility that Arm na Poblachta was responsible for the incident.Detective Chief Inspector Logue said: "Detectives from the Terrorism Investigation Unit are investigating a claim of responsibility that Arm na Poblachta was responsible for a vehicle hijacking and subsequent security alert in the Waterside area of Derry/Londonderry on Sunday November 20th.
