Those lockdown months taught us plenty of things about our hair: scrunchies are an acceptable hair accessory at any age, yes we CAN survive without our six-weekly highlights top-ups – and seeing naturally grey hair on display is no longer as taboo as it once was. In fact, in a recent poll Wella Professionals discovered that 57% of women feel that “grey is back in fashion”, with one in five seeing going grey as an “exciting new chapter” in their lives.
How can I avoid grey hair making my look “old”? Maintenance, in the form of regular salon treatments and trims, is key to keeping grey hair looking fresh and modern, explains Zoe Irwin, hair stylist and Wella colour trends expert. “Learn a couple of simple but effective styling techniques, and don't skip on investing in high-quality products,” she advises. “These will elevate your look and stop it from looking lacklustre.
Zoe agrees, advising clients to ask for “grey blending” in the salon chair – this uses techniques like babylights and balayage to gently break up the band of regrowth between your roots and the dyed hair, giving a natural result. “It’s perfect for those who want to embrace their grey hair gradually,” she says.
How do I care for my grey hair at home? When your hair stops producing pigment it becomes much more fragile, and you might find it feels more dry and brittle. Choose hydrating, strand-strengthening formulas such as Toni & Guy’s Strengthplex Shampoo and Conditioner, £7.19 each here.
