The Metropolitan Police confirmed they had made at least one arrest of a man 'appearing to lead a chant' after climbing a traffic light during a demonstration

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators chanted 'Intifada revolution' and 'UK government watch your back, Palestine is coming back' on the streets of London as tensions overspilled over the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The march, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, will commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, referring to the mass displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes in 1948. 'We’re aware of a man appearing to lead a chant during a demonstration and shortly afterwards climbing a traffic light on Regent’s Street W1,' the Met said on social media

The word has acquired connotations through two Palestinian uprisings against Israel, between 1987 and 1993, and between 2000 and 2005. The second, more violent intifada saw Palestinians blow up buses and attack nightclubs in Israel after an Israeli politician's visit to the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem.

Advertisement 'The conditions placed on the location and route of the PSC event take into account the impact these marches are having in London, the right to protest, and seeks to minimise the disruption they cause. The group have organised demonstrations to coincide with a number of the large-scale marches set up by pro-Palestinian groups in recent weeks.

Weekend protests have endured throughout the course of the war, with pro-Palestinian groups putting pressure on their leaders to end arms sales to Israel and ensure humanitarian aid reaches the civilian population, while calling for a ceasefire. 'By refusing to stop selling these arms, the UK is complicit in the slaughter of civilians taking place daily in Gaza.'

The United States has threatened to stop providing Israel with weapons unless it relents from its planned offensive on the southern city of Rafah, now home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced from communities further north. In France, data from the Interior ministry and the Jewish Community Protection Service watchdog showed that 1,676 anti-Semitic acts were reported in 2023, compared to 436 the previous year.

Foreseeing the impending collapse of the Ottoman Empire during World War I, the British and French began making designs on the region and proposed new administrations, Britain promising both an Arab state in Palestine in return for support in the war, and a Jewish homeland.
