Police and the bomb squad had to be called to the prison

A Nottinghamshire jail was placed in lockdown for hours when one of the prisoners placed a hoax improvised bomb in the exercise yard of its segregation unit. Nottingham Crown Court heard how convicted arsonist Mathew Lea left the plastic bottle fitted with wires and white powder under a door after he had covered the CCTV camera lens, which was monitoring him, with tissue paper.

Jailing him for 20 months, Judge Rosalind Coe KC said: “It was your actions which caused the segregation unit to have to be evacuated and the police and bomb disposal experts to have to be called out and caused a huge amount of disruption to the prison. Whether it was a joke or otherwise, you clearly intended for people to believe it might be an explosive device.

“He was spoken to by the police and told them it was ‘just a joke’.” Miss Pitman said after being moved to HMP Wakefield, in December 2022, a routine search of the defendant found the SD card which he later claimed he had “not even watched” and which contained the terrorism videos.

Prisoner's sentence type may have influenced suicide, watchdog saysA watchdog has stated that the type of sentence a prisoner was serving might have played a role in his decision to take his own life. The prisoner, John Winchcole, received an indeterminate sentence for public protection (IPP) in 2008. The controversial IPP sentences were introduced in 2005 for 'dangerous' and persistent criminals. Although abolished in 2012, they have left a legacy of prisoners who can be recalled to jail even after staying out of trouble for years. Mr Winchcole, who had been released on licence, was recalled in April 2018 and found unresponsive in his cell in September 2018.
