Officers are already struggling to cope with Scotland's overcrowded jails as the number of inmates continues to rise.

Prison officers have demanded their retirement age be lowered to reflect the demanding physical nature of their job.

A survey of Scots members of the Prison Officers Association published today found 95 per cent were worried they will have to quit before retirement age because of the challenges of the role. Phil Fairlie, POA assistant general secretary, said: "Rising prisoner numbers, understaffing and increasing levels of violence against staff from an ever more complex and challenging prisoner population is increasing the toll on our members.
