As the newly married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge waved from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, their happiness was tangible.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in April 2011 broke the mould for other reasons too, as Kate Middleton hailed from a middle-class family and was the first so-called “commoner” in 350 years to marry a future king. The pair first met in 2001, when they began art history degrees at St Andrews University in Scotland. Prior to university, William had dated a few well-connected girls – including Jecca Craig, Davina Duckworth-Chad and Rose Farquhar – who appeared on the 2006 BBC series How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?.
“Her natural aloofness and charm intrigued William and she won his heart in the first term,” says Robert Jobson in his book William At 40: The Making Of A Modern Monarch. “He pursued her, and she became his first proper girlfriend.” While he and Kate remained pals, her famous appearance at a charity fashion show is thought to have changed things. During the event, she modelled a skimpy see-through dress, and a smitten William reportedly remarked to a friend, “Wow, Kate’s hot!”
Following his own difficult childhood and adolescence, Kate’s stable upbringing contrasted starkly to his own. Her parents Michael, 72, and Carole, 67, met when they both worked for British Airways, and as a couple presented a strong family unit. They never held hands in public and tried to steer well clear of photographers. However, in April 2004 they were pictured together for the first time, while skiing in Klosters. The following day, a newspaper ran the headline, “The middle-class girl who shares William’s life ”.
In June 2005, both graduated from university and Kate briefly worked as an accessories buyer for fashion store Jigsaw before joining her parents’ company. Kate agreed, saying, “At the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but it actually made me a stronger person.” During their split, Kate was linked with shipping heir Sir Henry Ropner, which no doubt rang alarm bells for William.
Speaking in their engagement interview, he explained, “We had been talking about marriage for a while, so it wasn’t a massively big surprise. I took her somewhere nice in Kenya and I proposed.”
