Tom Betts is being courted again as the Premier League tries to find Richard Scudamore's successor, Sky News learns.

The other shortlisted candidate in the original Premier League process was Tim Davie, the chief executive of BBC Studios, who turned down a second approach after Ms Dinnage rejected the role.

The protracted search for a new chief executive of one of the world's most admired - and richest - sporting competitions has caused bewilderment among industry executives. Despite a frenzy of media interest in the identity of Mr Scudamore's successor, there has been a dearth of credible names suggested as being in the frame.

Under Mr Scudamore's leadership, Premier League broadcast rights in the UK and overseas exploded in value, generating billions of pounds in income for England's biggest clubs.
