Ex-Post Office chief Paula Vennells is facing the inquiry again, after being stunned into silence and breaking down in tears under questioning yesterday. Meanwhile, former sub-postmaster Alan Bates has said he has 'no sympathy' for Ms Vennells.

The inquiry has finished for the day, with the chair clarifying it will run through until the election before pausing on 4 and 5 July.For a second day, the inquiry heard evidence from one of the most prominent Post Office figures, former chief executive Paula Vennells.Yesterday, Ms Vennells underwent a difficult six hours of scrutiny, at times struggling to find the words to answer questions and at others breaking down in tears.

Groans and scoffs: The chair had to intervene to quieten the room when scoffs and groans were heard after Ms Vennells said she 'could not recall' for the 12th time.'Lost decade of miscarriage of justice': She admitted that failing to carry out a review of all false accounting prosecutions could have avoided a lost decade until miscarriages of justice were discovered. She agreed that limiting a review to 12-18 months, rather than five to 10 years, was not proper or fair.
