Lotterby produced and directed many classic comedies.

Sydney Lotterby, producer of Porridge and other British comedies, has died aged 93.

The director and producer, who also worked on Up Pompeii!, Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, Me Mammy and A Gentlemen’s Club, began his career as a cameraman at the BBC. He later became technical manager before joining the BBC’s Entertainment department in 1958 and turning his hand to producing and directing in 1963.

Other comedy classics he was known for include As Time Goes By, Open All Hours, Butterflies and May To December.He also worked on Last Of The Summer Wine and Yes, Minister as well as The Liver Birds.BBC Director General Lord Tony Hall said: ‘Sydney Lotterby wasn’t just part of the golden age of British comedy – he made many of the shows that stand out as real icons of the period.‘He will be hugely missed by many. Sydney leaves behind a true legacy of laughter.

His name was also immortalised by John Cleese in a sketch in At Last The 1948 Show called The Four Sydney Lotterbies about four men who were exactly alike and shared the same name, because the comedian liked the name so much.Sydney was also a four-time Bafta winner for comedy, including for Porridge, Going Straight and Yes Minister, as well as being nominated for 11 more Bafta awards. He was also appointed OBE in 1994.
