Coronavirus: Poorer households funding lockdown with debt, says think tank

Getty Images

Lower-income households are using savings and borrowing more during the coronavirus lockdown, while richer families are saving more as eating out and trips abroad are banned.Lower-income households are twice as likely as richer ones to have increased their debts during the crisis, it said. That compares to the £4,700 buffer of someone who has been able to work from home during the lockdown.

"Pre-coronavirus Britain was marked by soaring wealth and damaging wealth gaps between households," said George Bangham, economist at the Resolution Foundation. "These wealth divides have been exposed by the crisis. While higher-income households have built up their savings, many lower-income households have run theirs down and had to turn to high-interest credit."

Capitalism isn't even working in first world countries

Think tanks are just excuses to do nothing except pop up every now and then talking utter sh!te.

Let’s face it, they fund everything on debt that’s one of the reasons they are poor.

The entire country is funding lockdown with debt.

Do they have any other options? In places like Nigeria, the shops where poor households go for things on credit, are out of stock, with the shipowners in massive debt from their own creditors.

Any immigrant who commits a serious, or any violent crime, should on completion of their sentence be deported, or held in detention until such time as they can be deported. There should be no appeals process for this. No sob stories. No more chances.

Resolution Foundation.....set up by Clive Cowdery a £300,000 donator to the Liberal Democrats at the last election. Thinking this is the reason for the BBC pimping this story.....surely in line to receive the 'Stating the Bleedin obvious' award 2020.

Well... duuuhhh... and a think tank came up with this? I despair.

I will do youtube video viral and worldwide targeted your channel

Not new my family felt it, 3 adults mortgage, bills and food to pay with under £900 a month we lost full time self employed wage and trying to survive on part time 80% wage

When lockdowns happen for any reason allover the world.only poor people suffer. Govts should take make more financial moves to save them.

Good to see the government has furloughed all the middle class and well off that should be working in offices until October. And giving them 80 percent of wages so that they can still moan about inequality and go on BLM demos.

No shit.

Time to open up

I don't think we need a think tank to tell us that.

UK debt is bigger than economy for the first time since 1963.

That's so weird because here I am in California. I own my own 2/2 house OUTRIGHT....deed in hand. I have no debt and I am fantasizing about relocation to Europe at an undisclosed location. And I classify myself as 'middle poor'.

UK low income households turn to debt as rich save in lockdown.

Think Tank States the Obvious. Now on to weather... the sun will rise in the east tomorrow and set in the west.

Spaniards urged not to lower their guard as coronavirus state of emergency endsPM Pedro Sánchez calls for vigilance as country prepares to reopen its borders Ha ha, Spaniards are anything but responsible, I live there and I see it every day (people taking to the streets en masse, not wearing masks and social distancing? What is that?) Wise advice. While COVID-19 continues a pandemic no country is out of the woods yet. This is the side effect of being global. If they're letting foreigners in for a holiday they're not very responsible.
