Politics live: Liz Truss fights for her job in first conference speech shortly - as 'ingredients in place for election loss'

PM's challenge is to convince party and country to give her a chance

For Liz Truss, everything today will be about control - regaining the initiative after a week where she appears to have lost it. One of the weirder features of this conference has been that the closer you get to Liz Truss, the more you see a rather bullish confidence. In the survey of 1,751 British adults from 1-2 October, just 14% of the public said they had a favourable impression of the new Tory leader, compared with 26% who said the same between 21-22 September.

Whatever it was, reversing the 45p tax rise has begun a series of events undermining the PM's authority, laying the ground for an extraordinary conference speech.The tax U-turn showed that she is vulnerable to pressure from her MPs. Nadhim Zahawi reveals he wanted nothing to do with politics as a child after growing up in Iraq as it represented parades of tanks and having his door kicked in.

Mr Zahawi is also equalities minister and gets a big clap for saying the Tories legalised same-sex marriage"because love is love".And he says he endured prejudice growing up but says:"I also know Britain is the least racist places on earth." Mr Zahawi promises the party will actully deliver instead of just paying lip service, as he mentions Suella Braverman and promises she will crack down on crime with"more bobbies on the beat".As does Health Secretary Therese Coffey who he says will deliver for the NHS.

Mr Berry told the crowds that during the summer he had described Ms Truss as an"action woman" and she had delivered. Prime Minister Liz Truss made her pro-growth agenda clear during her leadership campaign and if people were not listening"that's more their problem than hers", Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has said.

That was a horrible mix of panto & darkness...

He is quite clearly a horrendous individual, who should be no-where near any decisions affecting peoples lives.
