A cyclist has slammed the"shocking level of ignorance" shown by a police officer who told him and other cyclists he was with to ride in single file and next to the kerb.ride in Bolton, Greater Manchester on Friday evening when a police van pulled up alongside his group and wound down the window.
Grahame told road.cc that after notifying Greater Manchester Police of the officer's incorrect assertions, he was very satisfied with the response the next day, with GMP apologising and saying the officer would be educated on traffic laws. "I will ensure words of advice are given to the officer along with some education around traffic offences/ cycling legalities."
GMP also promised to make all staff aware of the Highway Code in a briefing to avoid similar situations in the future.

How can officers enforce the law if they don't know the law? We are always being told ignorance of the law is no defence in court cases. I suspect ego kicks in with some officers, but as law enforcers, they cannot let ego get the better of them.
Yes also horse riders have been told off by officers while driving
Maybe all officers need to do a Bikeability course as standard.

Sadly this ignorance is all too common. If I said the term VRU to some of my non traffic based uniformed colleagues they would not know what it means. The worst part is you can have this type of officer involved in triage process for dashcam subs who apply terrible rationale.
Not changes, surely, elucidation of the rules, they were always like this
Is he visiting from Northern Ireland PSNI that’s what they told me when I reported a close pass
gmpolice You might want to share this image given to me by the road traffic unit in Surrey. SurreyRoadCops
What? I’ve been stopped on my bike by police to tell me I’m cycling TOO CLOSE to the kerb and to take primary position and own the road! The officers in question were lovely and made me feel much more confident riding.
Thick filth ..
Well done to correct a mistake. The single driver of Police van was taking up more space than 4 cyclists and complained THEY were taking up too much of road ! Give him a bike for a week 🚴🏻♂️🚶♀️🚴🏻♂️
Dear, oh dear, oh dear.
The drivist always trumps the police officer.
Well done MrHappyCyclist 👏 good to see quick honest response from gmpolice
Yeah GMP have plenty of form for crap like this.
Ffs!
It’s still safer if cyclists do ride next to the curb thought!
I was told once that was going to fast on a cycle lanes by a metpoliceuk on the great west road.
Education but no consequences…. Always a recipe for improvement isn’t it
ldnparks The point is (or should be) that a policeman was giving orders to someone, based on a lack of knowledge of the rules. It’s like Covid ‘lockdown’ all over again. They ask for our ‘indulgence’, when they hold (and use) coercive powers with no legal legitimacy.
You can't make this up. 🤦♂️
When even a copper doesn’t know the bloody rules.
