A police force is facing criticism after they launched an online form for people to ‘snitch’ on those breachingCambridgeshire Police tweeted: ‘We have now developed an online form allowing you to report individuals breaching Covid-19 restrictions via our website. Please do not call 101 to report breaches.’
They linked to a webpage where people can give details about a person or organisation ignoring the new rules.Like other forces, we’re urging people to use common sense. Please only our online form if there is a significant issue or breach. This may be a large gathering or group of people repeatedly ignoring the restrictions.
Lawyer David Allen Green said this was an ‘unpleasant form of policing’, saying it was ‘unwise to encourage neighbour to spy on neighbour, as it tears social fabric’.It is understood that the force made the decision due to the volume of calls they were receiving about people flouting the lockdown.‘Convenience does not justify the externality of creating a fearful society, of neighbours snitching on neighbours.
After receiving criticism, Cambridgeshire Police tweeted an update saying: ‘Like other forces, we’re urging people to use common sense. We have now developed an online form allowing you to report individuals breaching COVID-19 restrictions via our website:
I have multiple neighbours that need a telling off!! 😡
Snitch? We are adults not bloody 5yrs old! It's a public duty for adults to take responsibility, then this wouldn't be required anyway.
Neighbours shouldn’t be idiots then
Emphasis on ‘flouting’ surely.
Snitching? I don't care; if someone is not adhering to a clear set of rules which have been issued to try and save lives, then I'll happily report that person. It's like there's finally a mechanism in place to deal with the selfish people in society.
Ok, now we're getting draconian.
Maybe if this country as a whole took this pandemic seriously, then we wouldn’t need this. If absolutely everyone just locked down for 2 weeks, and only went out for actual essential things, the numbers would drop. However, you’ve got people wondering B&M because they’re bored.
Snitches get stitches 😂
CambridgePolice Remember when the GDRs Stassis report your neighbour policy was decried as evil & totalitarian? Well now there's an app folks!Bonus is that that app will know where YOUVE been and it will report you itself if you step outside when you shouldnt policebyCONSENT
