In the summer of 2020, police in France cracked an encrypted phone network called EncroChat, used by 60,000 criminals. This allowed them to read millions of messages and gather evidence on major-league criminal networks.
The operation resulted in over 3,000 arrests, 1,000 convictions, and the seizure of £80 million in cash, six tonnes of cocaine, and 173 firearms.
