PM warns of 'unprecedented sanctions' in fresh talks if Russia invades Ukraine

The UK prime minister spoke with US president Joe Biden and other world leaders about the Ukraine crisis and agreed 'swift retributive responses' if Russia invaded

Boris Johnson and world leaders including Joe Biden have agreed to take "swift retributive responses" if Russia invades Ukraine warning of "unprecedented sanctions".By Alexandra Rogers 23/01/2022 12:40pm GMT.occasions last month urging him not intervene militarily in Ukraine and said the United States will “will respond decisively” if Russia invades Ukraine.Monday January 24 2022, 12.

The Prime Minister met virtually with leaders of the US, Italy, Poland, France, Germany, European Council, European Commission, and Nato to discuss Ukraine, Downing Street said in a statement on Monday. It was agreed that no attack from Russia would be tolerated and that "diplomatic discussions" are the "first priority".A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "The leaders agreed on the importance of international unity in the face of growing Russian hostility.“We saw this playbook in 2014.The Prime Minister underlined the real human cost of any Russian aggression and the need to take all steps within our power to prevent that outcome."The leaders stressed that diplomatic discussions with Russia remain the first priority, and welcomed talks that have already taken place between Russia and Nato allies.“We also need to get a message that invading Ukraine, from a Russian perspective, is going to be a painful, violent and bloody business.

"They also agreed that the international community should not tolerate any action which undermines Ukrainian sovereignty.” Western officials have met with Russia urging a de-escalation of tensions between the nations. The Prime Minister outlined the steps the UK has taken to increase Ukraine's defensive capacity. He emphasised the need to support Ukraine's defences against the full spectrum of malign Russian activity."The leaders agreed that, should a further Russian incursion into Ukraine happen, allies must enact swift retributive responses including an unprecedented package of sanctions. He said Nato’s deployments and drills near Russia’s borders pose a security challenge that must be addressed immediately. They resolved to continue co-ordinating closely on any such response.

" Nato said on Monday that it was putting forces on standby and reinforcing eastern Europe with more ships and fighter jets, in what Russia denounced as Western "hysteria" in response to its build-up of troops on the Ukraine border. The US Department of Defense in Washington said about 8,500 American troops were put on heightened alert and were awaiting orders to deploy to the region, should Russia invade Ukraine.Tensions are high after Russia massed an estimated 100,000 troops in reach of its neighbour's border.Russia denies planning an invasion. But having surrounded Ukraine with forces from the north, east and south, Moscow is now citing the Western response as evidence that Russia is the target, not the instigator, of aggression.

Welcoming a series of deployments announced by alliance members in recent days, Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg earlier said the organisation would take "all necessary measures." "We will always respond to any deterioration of our security environment, including through strengthening our collective defence," Stoltenberg said in a statement. He told a news conference that the enhanced presence on Nato's eastern flank could include the deployment of additional battlegroups."We are considering also to have battlegroups..

.in the southeast of the alliance," Stoltenberg said.So far, Nato has about 4,000 troops in multinational battalions in Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland, backed by tanks, air defences and intelligence and surveillance units.US officials said the Pentagon was finalising efforts to identify specific units that it could deploy to Nato's eastern flank. One of the officials said up to 5,000 could be deployed, while a Nato diplomat said Washington was considering gradually transferring some troops stationed in western Europe to eastern Europe in the coming weeks.

Denmark, Spain, France and the Netherlands were all planning or considering sending troops, planes or ships to eastern Europe, Nato said.Ukraine shares borders with four NATO countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.A Polish official said Warsaw would draw the line at sending troops to Ukraine.Read More Read More.
