One MP said the plan appeared to be protecting the inheritances of those with means while ending the £20 uplift of universal credit that was originally given to poorer people to help them through the pandemic.

But this has provoked concern among some MPs because of the possibility of those with high value homes benefitting the most."I'm very concerned about the fact we seem to be protecting the inheritances of those with means at the same time as stripping the £20 uplift [in universal credit]," said one newly-elected MP.

Former prime minister John Major told the FT Weekend Festival that the policy was regressive and should be done in a"straightforward and honest fashion" through taxation. The TUC general secretary instead called for the government to increase capital gains tax - a levy on profits made when selling assets like property or shares.

The tax is also only paid on earnings, so wealthier individuals who live off rental income, savings or dividends don't contribute.

Boris and his mates should use the millions they are making out of the vaccines and the unnecessary paid for tests for travel that us people have to pay for

How about the PM and all MP's take a dam paycut. Pretty sure that be a better solution instead of raising peoples taxes and NI contributions Why reply to Sky News, well it never gets Passed on, does it

Let's think back to his Brexit pledge £350 million a week goes to Brussels let's give it to the NHS instead. Boris bollox again.

They need to rebrand the NI band system, if they increase NI by 1% that means if you earn 20k a year you’ll pay an extra £104 per annum but if you earn 50k you’ll pay nothing extra

Make taxation theft again!

Imagine the many millions you could make if you checked buy to let mortgages against self assessment forms. Also many of those people selling properties and not declaring it cheating the tax man out of millions every year. HMRCcustomers RishiSunak hmtreasury

Now that you have priorities are for economic refugees with housing, what will happen to people in uk already on housing list depriortised you have just voted yourself out of downing Street.

You missed the obvious solution which is a wealth tax that would easily cover this and still leave the rich staggeringly wealthy. Oh wait. This is a Murdoch channel.

Why not create another higher tax bracket?

I’m sure there’s plenty of Tony donors quietly smiling while they sit in their new houses by the pool paid for by this incompetent government. The masses will be made pick up the bill for the few.

Misleading. It's not their homes. It's the value of those homes that people want to pass on to their children. Many people expect to 'Will' £1m plus for which, thanks to immoral house price inflation, they have done absolutely nothing. Tax that.

The young WILL get to be old eventually

Young people become older

Those old people homes are young people’s inheritance and shouldn’t be sold off to pay for basic social care

Someone needs to be pay for all the billions of pounds worth of PPE their mates made and couldn't be used. PPEPollTax

Young don't understand. People are living longer, so they are actually saving for thier own retirement. Simple really.

Can we have the ethical debate now

NI going up protects not just the homes of older people but also their homes when they become older. No-one likes paying more but I think we all knew social care is woefully underfunded

Once again, the middle aged, pay for everything.

A National strike is the only cure for these evil tories enough is enough
