“At best he was clumsy and cowardly, by effectively picking on a sector where the vast majority... are on minimum wage” Mark Adams, head of Community Integrated Care, says Boris Johnson’s care home comments “brushed over the government’s failings”

But Mark Adams, who runs the charity Community Integrated Care, told the BBC Radio 4's Today programme the prime minister's comments were"cowardly" and a"travesty of leadership".He added:"If this is genuinely his view, I think we're almost entering a Kafkaesque alternative reality where the government sets the rules, we follow them, they don't like the results, they then deny setting the rules and blame the people that were trying to do their best.

Behind the scenes in the government, there is a frustration the care sector has escaped largely blame free from the crisis. As you would expert in a network of more than 14,000 homes there is a variation in performances and practices. The roll-out of testing was slow - it is only now that residents and staff are to get regular testing, vital if those who are infected but don't show symptoms are to be spotted. But no debate would be complete without mention of funding.

Chief executive Martin Green said:"We are at a loss to know why the Department of Health and Social Care is incapable of making swift decisions at a time of crisis. Asked on Monday about Sir Simon's comments, Mr Johnson said:"One of the things the crisis has shown is we need to think about how we organise our social care package better and how we make sure we look after people better who are in social care.

paullewismoney Much like you can paint over the grand canyon with 5L of emulsion

Correct me if I’m wrong but arnt the majority of care homes private🤔

paullewismoney BBC gets it wrong again. Do you seriously believe there weren't care homes that behaved poorly? Because the sectors has had no shortage of 'previous' on that score.

Mark my words, after the school, shops & pubs etc. reopening when the 2nd wave hits NHS, he will blame everyone but himself. When its time to take credit, these slimy politicians are the first to take it but taking responsibility for their mistakes isn't in their nature.

And how does being on minimum wages prevent you wearing the correct ppe. You either put it on all the time you're with residents....or you don't. The wages are an irrelevance. There are no excuses!

Mark Adams can go shove it!

They are the forgotten service and they were last on the list for PPE provisions. For those who state it’s the care homes fault to pay minimum wage, they clearly don’t understand the social care system. Historically the government via their local authorities always paid low wages

Ask hc1 bosses y told all home managers to fill asmany beds as can .because he in lot debt.

No it actually highlights that the owners of the homes charge crazy fees 5k a week per resident. Pay the staff a pittance and take no care of the residents. This is not a govt issue it's big business taking too much off the profits

It's not about profits and twisted daily mail reader-esque hatred and inhumanity. Its about having 25k positive untested Covid patients thrust upon them under threat of sanctions if they refused.

i couldn’t agree more! apparently, hospitals (which are obviously funded by the government) were discharging patients into carehomes without testing them even though they were potentially exposed to the virus. that’s probably why my Dad contracted Covid19 in the carehome he’s at!

' government failings' any other profession and the actions (gross incompetency's) would be considered criminal so let's call it what it is. gross negligence and Mass Negligent manslaughter/ murder of the British people borishasfailedtheuk Treason

Time to go Boris. you have hit rock bottom .

Employees getting paid less at care homes is Care homes own problem. Care home is a privately owned business. It’s the owner of the home to be blame not the government.

It's not at all surprising. It's what he does. The liar blames everyone except his Tory mates and himself. It's lucky we're not as stupid as he thinks we are

UKLabour Well said

Don’t moan now you voted for him

Hughesy53 Just got sacked from his other gig as a Jackson carloan double...

Out of interest, has BorisJohnson EVER apologised for anything? He’s proved that he can lie at the drop of a hat - why is ‘sorry’ so difficult? We know he’s the sort of man who’d step on someone else’s foot and blame them.

Most of these care homes are private business charging a small fortune to stay there, if they had no PPE look at the owners.

He has nothing to apologise for. Care homes make vast amounts of money and so should pay for their own PPE. ALL care home staff should have lived on site during the lockdown, that way the deaths would have been kept to an absolute minimum. Care homes have total responsibility.

Community Integrated Care: Turnover in 2019: £128M Senior employees of the 'Charity' seem to be well looked after.

86% privately owned its not the governments job to run their businesses or to provide PPE. owners charge upto £2000 a week, pay minimum wage to the staff.

UKLabour He didn’t pick on minimum wage earning staff, he picked on the fat cats that exploit these people for profits.

Boris Johnson has got his finger on the pulse of the United Kingdom.......said absolutely nobody.

UKLabour No he was correct in what he said the managers nerd to take responsibility for the failings instead of passing the book

Does Mark Adams control they pay of careers? Seems bit of own goal comment to slip in about minimum wage. Stereotyping a bit perhaps but sounds like a Tory voter

UKLabour It wasn’t the workers he was comment on but the owners -that’s obvious to most of us but conveniently for the owners and MSM to try to claim it was a criticism of the workers

BBCPolitics the owners aren't on minimum wage 🤨

Oh shut up.

You have to laugh at the idiots who don't hold the government responsible for handling this worldwide pandemic.

BBCPolitics Pontius Pilate BorisJohnson? Trying a new cosplay look after WinstonChurchill and Roosevelt? 🤔

Yes but the home owners run a business to make a profit!! They are responsible for their staff’s well being not the govt.

Bloke who pays people minimum wage whines about the fact that people in his sector are on minimum wage? The PM was also criticising people like Adams - not the care staff. You twats. Him and you.

MarkAdamsCEO Speak truth to the disgusting powers in charge. Well done

Nursing homes are mainly private companies nothing to do with NHS or government, it’s the responsibility of the homes management to ensure their staff have proper PPE equipment & to regularly test inmates & staff

The owners have drained every ounce of money from the businesses, selling the care homes and renting them back, low paid casual workers giving mostly ghastly care and even assaults - Gov need to impose better standards financially and operationally.

Never in the field of' battle was one so inapt inadequate and distain full ' towards the most vulnerable in our society' sadly 20,000 how have served the nation, in conflict ' was thrown under the Bus, by a govt ' that has lied and blamed care homes, vile and sickening.

James Corden has not weathered lock down well

Some care homes made mistakes, some MP's made mistakes, some govt and party officials made mistakes, they all need to be called out without fear or favour if only to credit the huge numbers who didn't make mistakes

Min wage means 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet' mentality = poor care. Don't blame the community you created; the Gov for their part in the duty of care; PPE folk had no idea what it was; how to get it; when they should have been using it already. You have a duty of care to the staff to

Truth hurts but Britain’s care sector need big changes.

Why are some burying their heads in the sand. There are many unscrupulous owners in the private care home sector who don’t sufficiently train, equip and compensate their staff, resulting in high rate of staff turnover and poor level of infection control and other safety measures.

0 hours and bad wages in a privately owned company is not the government its down to the company

“At best he was clumsy and cowardly, by effectively picking on a sector where the vast majority... are on minimum wage” Mark Adams, head of Community Integrated Care, says Boris Johnson’s care home comments “brushed over the justice league’s failings”

BBCPolitics How is it criticism of employees that they were not supplied with PPE by their employers? Typical BBC reporting DefundTheBBC

You have hit the nail on the head, Mr Adams. Staff on minimum wage, and be truthful a lot of them didn’t consider it a career job. Boris didn’t say it in that context and you are well aware a lot of homes did not realise how serious it was, and the council did NOT give them help

UnlawfulLockdown FraudulentDeathCertificates NonExistentCovid19 Ask the Govt to disprove any of the above & disclose the numbers that have died ‘OF’ Covid-19 as part of that evidence? The number is ZERO? BorisJohnson MattHancock DominicCummngs TickTockTickTock ⏰ 🤷🏻‍♂️

Let’s be clear, the majority of care homes are privately run and making a good profit! These homes are run in many cases by large organisations with extremely well paid senior staff and Management teams and boards

Really having had to deal with a luxury care home for over three years and take the management to Care Quality Commission in Scotland complaint upheld reckon they are ALL about profit movtive

Another one not wanting any of the 600 million. Or did the bbc forget to mention that bailing out of private companies?

BBCPolitics He's nailed Johnson in one interview. Dont stop now!

What has the fact that most employees are on minimum wage got to do with it . Did he expect them to buy there own PPE rather than as employer provide it!!!!!

Brushed over, BorisJohnson is tyring to air brush out any responsibility his ineffectual cabinet has for the 20,000 plus deaths in care homes. Make no doubt about it they are directly culpable in causing those deaths. they were well aware of the issue but too busy on Brexit.

How much outside trainers are brought in to these Carehomes to train in handling and moving people, infectioncontrol

BBCPolitics ....its Boris's fault when it rains to you know......oh, my Goldfish died, its Boris's fault !!!

Think it was more the owners/managers he was getting at, not the staff who can only do what they are told, but then again it makes a better headline when you twist the facts.

BBCPolitics This government following Johnsons example lie on every issue. Total incompetence and totally untrustworthy.

BBCPolitics Boris will blame everyone and anyone but never himself. Plus his mantra is 'never apologise' BorisJohnson

CORRECT !

Care home workers, many on minimum wage and dodgy contracts, are some of the absolute real heroes of the pandemic.

As usual words have been manipulated to sound differently and give a different interpretation

BBCPolitics

BBCPolitics What is clumsy and cowardly about speaking the truth? You can not excuse sloppy behaviour on the back of minimum wage. Sorry that doesn't really wash.

Blame game 'spin lies deflection' from a uncaring PM, and ministers in government! Care homes were thrown to the dog's, to free up NHS beds, without testing, no ring if care was ever put around them, and to blame care homes, is' f**king disgusting' ill never vote tory again

All who read this news must have been as disgusted as I with our cowardly PM...

He's not talking about the staff. He's referring to the owners of care homes. My girlfriend works in care, and the company she works for, cut as many corners as they could.

We all know that the BBC is a trash outfit.

So if the vast majority are on the minimum wage, what has he done about it, I thought majority were privately owned. Every time there is criticism we get the Head of this, head of that, BMA, Head of Public Health, etc, etc, what do they actually do, what planning of their own

What has minimum wage got to do with anything?

There was failings in all areas..as long as your not just picking on one..but showing where everyone went wrong...then that's a good thing not bad... Hopefully ( but won't hold my breath ) these lot learn in case there's a next time..

NO pal your wrong, the OWNERS need to apologize, they are private businesses costing residents up to £1400 a week !

HerdImmunityNoPPE,Masks, distancing,Fake R,Testing Numbers No app.Return state schools, shopping, Pubs ,construction, low skilled jobs. UK &USA joint approach.Blame China, WHO, Scientists, Unions, Councils/Governors , Care Home Staff &BLM for world leading deaths 130000 & 65000.

A very powerful interview

The staff are on minimum wages but the families of residents aren’t paying minimum wages to keep them there are they?

Are you actually serious. These are extremely viable businesses making their owners millions. They are responsible for the safety themselves and the Councils for the Council run ones. I am furious with Boris at the moment but get a grip with reality and stop the blame game.
