Green has become a go-to colour for watch brands over the past few years. It’s a trend Piaget has now got on board with, launching its two latest models, the Polo Green Date and Polo Green Skeleton. Its marketing materials trumpet the move as trailblazing and trendsetting. “Taking the collection into a new territory of expression for trendsetters who love design, elegance, and want to share their shade of bold.
In fact, Piaget was once known for using strong primary colours. As famous for its jewellery as it was its watches, it pioneered ornamental stone dials in the 1960s and 1970s – Jackie Kennedy owned a jade Piaget. The following decade it launched its gold Polo “sports” watch, the ultimate lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous flex. Making its debut in 1979 it weighed the same as a cricket ball, came powered by a then-prestigious quartz movement and went on to account for a third of Piaget’s sales. The company’s own adverts called the Polo line “the most expensive watches in the world”.
