US seizes cargo ship that contained 20 tonnes of cocaine, thought to be worth more than $1bn

"When a vessel brings such an outrageous amount of deadly drugs into Philadelphia waters, my office and our agency partners will pursue the most severe consequences possible against all involved parties in order to protect our district - and our country."

Casey Durst, the director of field operations in Baltimore for US customs said:"Seizing a vessel of this size is an unusual enforcement action for CBP [Customs and Border Protection], but is indicative of the serious consequences associated with an alleged conspiracy by crew members and others to smuggle a record load of dangerous drugs through the United States.

"This action serves as a reminder for all shipping lines and vessel masters of their responsibilities under US and international law to implement and enforce stringent security measures to prevent smuggling attempts such as this."MSC, which owns and operates the ship, has not responded to the seizure, but in a statement following the arrests, it said:"Unfortunately, shipping and logistics companies are from time to time affected by trafficking problems.

"MSC is committed to working with authorities and industry groups worldwide to improve the security of the international supply chain and ensure that illegal practices are dealt with promptly and thoroughly by the relevant authorities."Speaking to NBC, a source alleged that the drugs were not destined for Philadelphia, but instead to the Netherlands and France.

As well as the drugs, the ship's containers were filled with wine, paperboard vegetable extracts and dried nuts from destinations all over the world, which were destined to countries such as Ireland and India.

Love how your journalist described the quantity of cocaine seized in terms of a 2 mile 'line' - is that because we're now all fed-up of football pitches?

20 tonnes ... yikes!!!

Can't turn your nose up at that!

Oh crap..what is a government going do now 😱

And Mexicans weren't crossing the border illegally.

Westminster MPs devastated.

CBP! 👏 👏👏

Wouldn’t be surprised if the CIA got busted by the FBI...

Annoying.....pumping uo the price of my weekend bumps. Shit

Ffs they better start letting them get through, you think that's coke you're sniffing off fat Tony or Ross.. gram of raw.. it's some shit that was made in Brixton with chemicals from round the corner.. I wouldn't mind one of packets

Given huge correlation between drugs & crime why is there not a huge international effort to close down the supply? If USA/UK can find reasons to invade sovereign states for lesser reasons this seems incredibly sensible. There’s not many people who’d argue drugs to be good!!

🤔🤔🤔🤔

WoW

WHAT THA F?! 😱 FAT DONNY tells us that the drugs comes thru the border with Mexico. That means he’s a liar! 🙄

Arghhhhhh

Narcos!!!

20 tonnes! Wow 😮

Better get that sea wall up

Gutted!

Is this why Tommeh wants US asylum?

well, well, well... how to deal it? which market? can't recoup a $1bn in smoke.

Build that sea wall build that sea wall!

How war-hardened Albanian gangs have taken over Britain's cocaine marketALBANIAN gangs smuggling huge shipments of cocaine direct from Europe have changed the face of the UK’s drug market. The drug is at its cheapest since the 1990s and purer than it has been for… brexit 31 October 🙏🏻 Very poor reflection on the UK border agency that lots of Albanians posed as Kosovans and were allowed entrance to the UK under false pretenses. That's what the EU's open boarders policy has done to Britain, allowed the worst of Europe into our country unchecked, Boris needs to treble our border controls and return these scumbags from whence they came.
