Nearly 11 million people landed on Mars last week - even if it was just in names only

NASA's PerseveranceUpon these small pieces of silicon - each one no larger than a fingernail - millions of names were etched with an electron beam. The plate bearing the names of 11 million people can be seen, circled, as Perseverance heads towards the surface of Mars. Pic: NASA

The beam allows for the writing to be less than one micron across - much less than the width of a human hair. In total, 10,932,295 people from around 250 countries and territories had their names travel the 300 million miles through the solar system aboard the rover. And 284,350 of those were people in the UK, with participating countries stretching from the United States to Niue as part of the"Send Your Name To Mars" project.

All the way from Devon Island Canada 🇨🇦

Why though? I don't get it?

I was one!!

Very impressive feat but - on earth as it is on Mars? Not wanting to be a Luddite, but if maybe we had learned not to split infinitives or strive for infinity and galaxies beyond, but had stayed boldly - what else might be different? From an earlier blog:

I was one of them and I haven't even been sent a blue peter badge

NO THEY DIDN'T. Have you ever seen such absolute bullshit in all your life..

My children’s names were on it!

Pity they couldn’t transport the snp to Mars

NASA shares first recording of Perseverance firing its laser on MarsThe sounds of 30 impacts can be heard during the audio recording, which were shot from Perseverance's SuperCam instrument attached to its 'head' that targeted an area 10 feet away. I will never understand this, surely it would be better to go to a planet that has oceans?. All that technology in play and I still can’t get beyond the fact that it has a nickname of Perky. Looks like a wheat tortilla
