After telling the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme the Prime Minister will “support those people who are facing the toughest time”, the Levelling Up Secretary was asked if some of the options considered by Mr Sunak will mean “extra cash” for renters.
He said: “It will mean or could mean targeted support for all sorts of people who are in difficulty, but again, what I can’t do at this stage is anticipate specific support.” When asked again, Mr Gove said: “There are people who are going to be in all sorts of difficult economic circumstances in the next six months. Rent is simply going to be one of the challenges that people face. We know it’s, I take obviously no pleasure in saying this, but we’ve also got food price inflation.
“We have already had support for people who are facing rising energy prices, the combination of inflation and higher interest rates in order to deal with inflation create difficulties, and there are different ways of supporting people, whether that’s through universal credit, whether that’s through the tax system…”
