Some of Lee Anderson's constituents say the Ashfield MP is a "Marmite character" after a week in which he once again faced repeated criticism for his views on food banks. Mr Anderson, who was elected as Ashfield's Conservative MP at the 2019 general election, argues that anyone earning more than £30,000 and using a food bank "must have a budgeting problem."
The tweet received much criticism and reports have since emerged that the parliamentary assistant in question attended a private school, with some therefore questioning whether she is a good example of someone who doesn't need to use a food bank. Lee Anderson is used to courting controversy and in his own Twitter profile, which he only set up in December, he acknowledges that he joined the platform partly due to "frequent trending.
At the 2019 election, Lee Anderson secured a majority of nearly 40% with over 19,000 votes being cast in his favour. He also receives hundreds of messages of online support every day from people in his constituency. But some were willing to talk and expressed their support for Lee Anderson and said that one of his strengths was his work as a constituency MP. Gary S., 51, who lives in Selston, said: "He does seem to be a man of action and if there's something that needs doing where there is red tape in the way, he always seems to question why it can't be done.
