As Elon Musk radically redraws Twitter, what alternatives are out there? And are they ready? 🔎 Analysis by stokel

Oh, and the platform is moving towards a model that disadvantages anyone who doesn’tIt’s a trying time for anyone who has made Twitter their online home. But there are alternatives out there, trying to vie for your attention. “Every user is faced with this choice: ‘Do I continue on Twitter or do I migrate?’” says Manoel Horta Ribeiro, a social media expert at EPFL Lausanne, a Swiss university.

Key amongst them is Mastodon. The platform, which is an open-sourced equivalent of Twitter , has been around since 2016. Developed by computer programmer Eugen Rochko, it’sby taking power away from individual platforms and putting it into the hands of users. Mastodon gained 120,000 users in the first four days after Musk took over Twitter, and overall has seen nearly a quarter of a million new signups since the shift. The platform works in a federated way, meaning that you can sign up to any self-funded and set-up server. While Twitter’s entire website is hosted only on computer servers the site runs, Mastodon allows anyone to set up a server that you can join and post into the entire Mastodon universe, called the “fediverse” .

However, that slightly more convoluted process – which is a benefit when it comes to not being at the whims of whoever runs the entire platform – does make it slightly more difficult for the average user to join up. It also requires users to be more conscious of who they’re signing up with. Whoever runs the server you join is theoretically in control of your account and its details, including your password. It’s therefore important to think carefully about how you enter the Mastodon world.
