Floating bus stops on a new cycle lane in Bath have come under criticism due to claims that the infrastructure puts pedestrians getting on and off buses at risk.
“The road has been made more narrow to fit the system which makes it dangerous for vehicles too – it is absolutely ridiculous,” he claimed. “Once people get used to it, and cyclists realise that they must stop or they are breaking the law, it will become safe,” he said. “The road has been narrowed but there’s no reason it should be any more dangerous or congested for vehicles than it was: no traffic lanes have been removed. A safer alternative for getting into the centre is a must to get people to change their transport habits, and this scheme is a solid start.”
What’s the problem here? The new hierarchy in the Highway Code puts pedestrians above cyclists. If there’s a pedestrian crossing the cycle lane to board a bus cyclists just have to stop simples, as opposed to cyclists acting as many do now by ignoring red lights & Zebra crossings
s'fine. Thing is, people who use bus stops use them regularly, so they get used to it quickly. This one has been in place for a decade, not aware of any injury reports. Itchen Bridge, Southampton. Very heavy cycle, pedestrian, and motor traffic.
KarlOnSea In September I cycle in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Italy, in all of those countries I saw 'floating bus stops', they are just normal there, no inflated fears about them being 'dangerous'... There is far too much anti cycle infra Astroturfing in the UK...
FFS! That's NOT a floating bus stop design , that's a pile of crap infrastructure a council have thought up with no frigging clue what a floating bus stop! A 5yr old could design a better one!
Floating bus stop? Have I got it wrong, I thought cycle lanes went behind floating bus stops?
Work great in NL, I think he's right, people just need to be educated
Says the councillor who probably drives everywhere.
RantyHighwayman Seems like a poor design, have the bus stop on an island instead with cyclists made to give way at the crossing points. Works well elsewhere.
KarlOnSea These don’t work as they have put these in Cardiff. People queue blocking the cycle lane or don’t notice cyclists coming towards them. The non cycling councillors and road engineers know best!
