“At present, I have no plans to stand for selection in [Islington North]. I am still looking to be selected as a Labour candidate if the right opportunity comes along,” said former Newsnight and Channel 4 economics editor Paul Mason eleanormia reports

Islington North has elected Mr Corbyn for 40 years and it is expected that any official Labour candidate would face a difficult campaign against the former leader.

Mr Mason, 63, was previously a prominent supporter of Mr Corbyn, but later heavily criticised him over his handling of antisemitism in the party and his response to Brexit. The former journalist has previously sought selection in a number of safe Labour seats including Stretford and Urmston, Sheffield Central and the newly-created seat of Mid and South Pembrokeshire. He failed to be selected as Labour candidate in all these seats., he said: “As a keen supporter of the Starmer project I’m still hoping to stand for selection, to contribute my political experience to Labour in the next parliament.

“But, right now, I’m concentrating on getting our three brilliant by-election candidates into Westminster on 20 July.”
